The Diamond Geezers challenge aimed to raise £4,000 by playing 72 holes of golf in one day on four courses in four different counties in the Yorkshire/North East region. As keen golfers we wanted to use our passion for golf to raise funds for the DofE, but in a unique and challenging way. We’ve actually now raised over £5,000!

After a 3.45am start we tee’d off at 4.20am at The Northumberland County Golf Club just as the sun rose, which was the most memorable moment of the day. Having completed 18 holes before 7am we moved on to Wynyard, near Durham, for another round of golf. After a quick change into our specially designed RSM/DofE golf shirts and we were on the road again to Oakdale, Harrogate (North Yorkshire).
From Oakdale we made our way through the traffic to Bradford Golf Club (West Yorkshire). Teeing off at around 6.30pm with our wives caddying and as luck would have it - the heavens opened. The wives had a reprieve after eight holes and retired to the clubhouse while the Geezers completed the final 18 holes in the dusk at around 9.15pm.
Keeping the standard of golf up was the most difficult part but each set of 18 holes provided a competitive game – special thanks to the copious amounts of Jaffa cakes, wine gums, energy bars, tea, coffee and water for keeping our energy levels up.
Our final stats for the day
Steps: 208,000 between the four of us.
Miles: 100 combined on foot and 224 by car.
Floors climbed: the equivalent of 412 between us (Fitbit counts a floor as the equivalent increase in elevation of 10 stair steps).
Calories burned: 7,000 each, although given the amount of Jaffa Cakes, wine gums etc consumed on the day we probably put all of those back on!
The challenge provided a great opportunity to push ourselves and work together to not only finish 72 holes in 17 hours, but raise over £5,000 of much-needed funds for a great cause.
Thanks to everyone who supported us and donated. Special thanks to each golf club for hosting, Geoff Potter for getting us from A to B, Global Autocare for the loan of the car and James Whittaker Golf and Nike for our kit.
