Leicester takes top spot for digital tech growth

A new report issued today by Tech Nation shows that Leicester has seen the biggest increase in new digital technology firms of any UK city in the last decade.

Commenting on the Tech Nation 2018 report, Kevin Harris, office managing partner at RSM in Leicester said:

‘Leicester should rightly be proud of the fact that it has secured the highest growth in tech company births of any UK city.

‘RSM’s own research published earlier this year found that new tech company incorporations across the East Midlands jumped by 50 per cent in the last year alone.

‘The digital tech sector now turns over £750m locally and supports almost 7,000 jobs.

‘So what is behind this exceptional growth? Our city’s universities are playing a key role in developing and nurturing talent. The University of Leicester, particularly, is to be commended for its investment in a new innovation centre which is helping to drive creative innovation and support graduates to turn their ideas into viable commercial ventures.

‘Leicester is also drawing talent because of its good transport links and the quality of life it offers – without the London price tag.

‘The report also considers some of the challenges facing the local tech sector. Access to finance is top of the list but there are many avenues to funding that are available for businesses to explore including through the recently launched Midlands Engine Investment Fund.

'Overall, the city now has an excellent infrastructure and support network for ambitious tech businesses, the sector is growing and collectively we need to ensure that this momentum is sustained.’
