55 UK businesses are recognised in Europe's largest business competition

National champions named across the United Kingdom in the European business awards 2016/17, sponsored by RSM.

London: 55 of the UK’s leading businesses have been named National Champions in The European Business Awards sponsored by RSM; Europe’s largest business competition which recognises and celebrates business excellence across the region.

A total of 636 National Champions were chosen in the first round of judging, with the 55 businesses from the United Kingdom set to compete against businesses from 33 other countries in the next round of judging.

The selected companies represent all major industry sectors and range from small start-ups to large multinationals. Within the UK, companies in the areas of manufacturing, business services, financial services and IT technology performed particularly well this year and are well-represented among the UK National Champions.

Celebrating its 10th year, the Awards are supported by business leaders, academics and political representatives from across Europe, and this year engaged with over 33,000 businesses. These companies will now move to the next stage of the competition, which includes a video presentation and a public vote.

Jean Stephens, CEO of RSM International, the sixth largest network of independent audit, tax and consulting firms and the lead sponsor of the European Business Awards, comments:

'The strength and depth of participants in the programme continues to improve year on year, which is a true testament to the tenacity and commitment of businesses across the continent. I would like to offer my congratulations to all of the National Champions and wish them luck in the coming rounds.'

David Gwilliam, chief operating officer of RSM UK, added his praise to the successful businesses:

'It is a reflection of the strength, individuality and innovation of British businesses that so many have been recognised as National Champions. The variety of industries and company sizes is a great reminder of the hard work and outputs that are delivered across the UK every day. I wish them all luck in the next round of the competition.'

The next round requires the National Champions to make a presentation video, explaining their business success and achievements. The Awards’ independent judges will award the best of this group the ‘Ruban d’Honneur’ status and the selected companies will then go on to the Gala Final in 2017.

Separately, in a two stage public vote, the videos will be hosted on the European Business Awards website, and the company that receives the most votes in their country will become the ‘National Public Champion’. Last year over 227,000 votes were cast as companies were supported globally by their clients, staff and peers, as well as the general public.

Lead sponsor RSM, the sixth largest network of independent audit, tax and consulting firms worldwide, has supported the European Business Awards since its inception. The Awards’ core purpose is to support the development of a stronger and more successful business community throughout Europe. Additional sponsors and partners of the Awards include UK Trade and Investment, ELITE and PR Newswire.

In the 2015/16 competition, all EU member markets were represented plus Turkey, Norway, Switzerland, Serbia and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Their combined revenue exceeded €1.2trn employing over 2.5 million people.
